Well against everyone’s better judgement it looks like the Baritone band, The Travelling Wall Barries, is going to record on the second week of December.
This is an idea of Randy Sorrel’s who books the pilot. Randy asked me to put something special together for the Toronto Jazz Fest this year and because I’d just bought a great new Ted Klum baritone mouthpiece (the London Model) I thought why not play it with two other baritone players ( I know it doesn’t really make sense but it seemed like a good idea at the time). I called Shirantha Beddage, and Chris Gale and then added Andy Scott on guitar and he brought Morgan Childs on drums and Jeff McKleod on B3. The band is a lot of fun so I booked a month of Wens. at the Rex Hotel and it’s going really well.So well that we’ve decided to record the second week of Dec. to just see what we have. I’ve written about 5 tunes so far Andy’s done 3 or 4 and we’re getting a tune from everyone in the band. I should have some video or at least pictures and maybe rough mixes before christmas. If all goes well well we might get a CD out next year.
Had a great time playing at Humber with Ryan Truesdale. We played music from the Gil Evans book that Ryan has discovered. I played Tenor,Alto Flute, flute, Bass Clarinet,Clarinet and Oboe ( I think that’s it) the music was fantastic and the Band Kicked ass. What a great opportunity!
My latest Cd At This Point with the quintet is doing very well and can be downloaded at itunes. A couple of people have asked for copies of the charts..I’ll try to post them soon.
Most of the music from At this Point is being arranged for big band by Dan Jamison (check out his site he is a great musician) and I’ll be featuring the new music at the Rex in March with the Humber College Big Band under the direction of Mark Promane.
I’ve also been asked to direct the Conn-Selmer All-Star big band at this years Music-fest in Toronto. Our guest artist will be the Great Saxophonist Pat Labarbera. If I twist Pat’s arm a little maybe I can ask him to play one of my tunes with the band.
I’ll be playing with the Napean All-Star band under the direction of Neil York-Slader in Ottawa in May and at Musicfest. I’ll be playing some of Dan’s charts with them as well. I can’t wait to hear them.
Well that’s the news for now.
Thanks for visiting.
